At CTKCS, we use an AWESOME totally interactive music curriculum, called Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music, to get our students in K-5 up and moving in the music room. Rhythm instruments, xylophones, glockenspiels, recorders, and lots of singing and moving, give our students skills to develop a love of music, as well as cultural and historical information about music.
Our 3rd and 4th graders use skills taught in earlier grades to learn to play the recorder. Our fifth graders will begin to write music while preparing a special project in Quaver’s called “Creating a Jingle”. Check this program out for yourself and do some “at home” music activities with your child by going to quavermusic.com.
Our students have the opportunity to join our liturgical choir for school Masses as singers and guitarists. Students who take private lessons can also share their talents by playing at Mass. Mrs. Linda Abercrombie, from the Mobile Symphony, teaches a Strings Class to 2nd and 3rd grade students interested in learning to play the violin. We have an after school piano class, taught by Ms. Brittany Gates, called Musical Beginnings.
We have several dramatic performances throughout the school year. Each class (K3-8) will participate in a song or skit for our annual “Grandparents and Grand Friends Day” program.
At Christmas, several classes come together to present a Christmas Pageant, celebrating the birthday of Jesus.
Our 8th graders spend Valentine’s Day entertaining patients at several local nursing homes with a special choral performance each year as a service project.
Students in the 5th-8th grades are able to audition for our spring play.
We have purchased Ukeleles for our 5th grade students through a grant from the Star Light Program of Baldwin County EMC. We would love to be able to purchase 10 Snark Tuners especially made to tune Ukeleles at about $20 each and a few sets of strings. If you have a Ukelele that is just sitting around the house, we would love to have a few extras for the music room.
Bass Xylophone - these are rather expensive as they range in cost from around $500-$2,000.
Other various xylophones are $55 and up.
