CTKCS’s own Spanish teacher, Señora Davidson traveled to the Republic of Cuba over the summer break. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean and, with over 11 million inhabitants. Señora Davidson spent nearly two weeks in the impoverished community of Quiebra Hacha (Broken Axe). There, she was blessed with the opportunity to teach a Bible school to Cuban children whose ages ranged from 4-17 years old. The majority of these children were not of the Christian faith. More than 70% of the population of Quiebra Hacha actively practices an Afro-Caribbean religion called “Santería”, which is very similar to Creole/Haitian Voodoo.
“It was such a blessing to have been called to Cuba. I had no idea what I was in for when I signed up to go on this mission trip. The Lord truly guided my every (Spanish) word spoken to these children. I pray those words have become seeds that will continue to grow within their young hearts for many years to come.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, I will begin teaching students about Cuba- along with many other Spanish-speaking countries whose people and cultures continue to influence and contribute to the unique diversity of our great nation. I look forward to sharing this experience with my students through stories, pictures, and video clips from my trip to Cuba.”
