Congratulations to Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Williams for receiving Star Light grants, each for a project connecting their curriculum with the arts.
Mrs. Ford's project, Mirrors and Windows...A Journey into Genres with Literature Circles, is an innovative and creative approach where students will... “journey through the genres” of fantasy, realistic fiction and historical fiction via Literature Circles... explore books within each genre to discover if it is a mirror or a window..and communicate with postcards to a Book Buddy...create Book Trailers...present Book Talks...create an art project depicting a mirror or a window to be displayed in a Gallery Walk. Students will explore different genres of books to create postcards and book trailers as well as presenting a book talk. The finished products will be featured in an upcoming Gallery Walk.
Mrs. Williams's grant will fund a 3D cell project for her 7th grade class connecting life science with art by each creating their own rendering of a cell to understand the function of each organelle within a cell. 7th grade Life Science spends the first part of the school year studying the characteristics of life. Students will be working with Mrs. Hutson, our art teacher, to create their own artistic rendering of a cell. Students will place items in a 12 x 12 box frame to represent the parts of a cell and label them. When all the parts are assembled they will be fixed together with resin. This will be a great culmination to the semester and allow students to understand more clearly what each organelle does and choose a symbol representing what it looks like - their own 3-D artistic rendering of a cell.
The Operation Round Up Star Light Award is an educational grant program through Baldwin EMC designed to provide support to teachers for the direct purpose of improving learning through a specific lesson and/or project in the classroom using innovative or creative techniques. Congratulations Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Williams!
